- In the winter of 1991 a few dozen professors gather at a rural Iowa college to celebrate the life and work of reclusive German philosopher Erik Weber. Claire Sinclair is not one of them. She thinks philosophy conferences are boring and is only attending the opening dinner to support her partner, Emma, who organized the meeting. But when Claire stumbles upon Weber’s body on an icy sidewalk the first night of the gathering, things get a little complicated. As a scholar, Weber was quite admirable, as a human being, not so much. And the recently opened files of the East German secret police reveal some nasty tidbits about Weber’s past. Even Emma seems to be hiding something about her relationship with the old man. Against her will, Claire is inexorably drawn into a vortex of murdered philosophers, betrayed colleagues, cheating spouses and … frozen sperm.
