Britain s first pop chart was produced by the New Musical Express on 14th November 1952. Staff on the music title had spent much of the previous week on the telephone to a number of record stores around the country, asking them for details of their best selling records. From the information received, the NME produced a Top 12 (although owing to a number of ties there was actually fifteen titles listed!), with Al Martino s 'Here In My Heart' the very first chart topper. Thus began a love affair with the singles chart that continues to this day. This album features all fifteen titles that made up the very first chart. We begin the listing as if a radio station of the day had aired the chart: starting at number twelve and working our way towards the number one position. It goes without saying that all the records were new entries , the first and only occasion in which the entire top twelve has been new entries!
