This detector pen is filled with an iodine-based ink designed to be applied to banknotes in an attempt to determine authenticity. Most genuine banknotes are printed on paper made with cotton fibers and do not contain the starches that are reactive with iodine, so when the pen is used to mark genuine bills the mark will be yellowish or colorless. Counterfeit bills, however, are typically printed on photocopier paper or standard printer paper, so the ink from this pen will change to black if the bill is counterfeit.
