- In US manufacturing, design engineers develop component and assembly designs with precise dimensions. Historically, parts were made with processes that were intended to make parts within the specification limits (tolerances). Often processes made parts outside of the tolerances and a complete field exists to describe methods to sample produced parts and predict whether or not the population is "in spec." If parts are either found "out of spec" or predicted to be "out of spec," all the parts have to be sorted to insure no bad parts move to the next step in the process. Because of a myriad of issues which can cause bad decisions to be made, most production process have a continuing issue of parts being rejected either internally or by the next step in the process. We do this by (1) recognizing the "best" value, (2) Use variables data to ensure the process average is as close to the best value as possible, and (3) Use the concept of Never Ending Improvement to identify and reduce the variability of products produced. When parts are at the target value with minimal variability the product will meet design intent with better quality, reliability and durability. It is the author's intention to provide a compelling argument that Target Value Principles will greatly improve any manufacturing operation.
