Sobre este producto
  • Linus Torvalds is widely regarded as the creator of Linux kernel (the heart of Linux distributions), but what is quite less widely known is that Linus Torvalds also initiated another project that has very well transformed the way modern software is built, and that is Git itself. Initially created to manage the source code and development of Linux kernel itself, Git is now being widely used in most software development projects in the world due to its distributive nature. It is also quite interesting to note that a long-time rival of GNU/Linux, Microsoft finally embraced both the projects from Linus Torvalds, they not only embraced Git, but they also contributed to enhancing its performance and further using it in managing their own projects. Presently, Microsoft not only uses Git in their own projects, they also currently own the largest online Git hosting platform called GitHub for quite some years now. Other than Microsoft, Google, Netflix, and Twitter are few of the notable companies using Git on a regular basis. The importance of Git and its online hosting platform GitHub cannot be denied in any major software development projects these days, especially owing to the open-source drive and acceptance since the past two decades. Even though GitHub is not the only platform for hosting online repositories, GitLab, Bitbucket and some others are quite close competitors in terms of features and offerings. But the common theme is that the concepts of code collaboration are quite similar amongst different online providers and locally hostable solutions. Appropriately speaking, you can quite easily set up your own Git hosting environments locally or in the cloud without using any of the cloud-based services, and that gets quite important for organizations that have compliance issues with respect to exposure of their data and codebases. In this regard, large organizations can use GitHub’s services for local hosting, but commonly GitLab is one of the preferred choices for locally hosting Git repositories within local networks, along-side Team Foundation Server. The aim of this course is to make Git easily understandable and acceptable for new developers, thus, we will start from the very basic concepts of source control management and its importance, especially by using Git with vary basic features. Then we will move to understand remotely hosted repositories through GitHub, while understanding basics of collaborations with other team members via remotely hosted repositories. As the concepts are quite common amongst different hosting providers, they can also be applied to GitLab hosted at local networks. Therefore, we will try to build concepts required for working with Git and to use it effectively on a routine basis like a seamless part of software development process. While discussing GitHub, we will also look at Markdown documentation format which is quite common in documenting projects for being very close to readable plain text files while allowing text formatting without impacting document readability. With this, let’s get started!
