Undeterred, Poland progressed to the knockout stage, where they faced the formidable Brazil in the third-place play-off. In a historic moment, they emerged victorious with a 1-0 scoreline, propelled by the tournament's leading goalscorer, Grzegorz Lato, achieving their best-ever result in a World Cup. Fast forward to 1982, the group stage commenced with a goalless draw against Italy, followed by another draw against Cameroon. Despite these lukewarm performances, Poland rebounded impressively with a remarkable 5-0 triumph over Peru, securing their spot in the second group stage. The momentum continued with a convincing 3-0 win against Belgium, and despite a 0-0 draw against the Soviet Union, Poland secured a place in the knockout stage.The decisive phase began with a 0-2 loss to Italy. However, Poland rebounded in the third-place play-off, triumphing 3-2 against France and securing a proud and memorable third-place finish in the tournament—a significant achievement for the nation.
