- Web services technology is a huge area as is Microsoft Access. They can mean very different things to each of us depending upon on own particular experience and expertise. We may have used either one or both of these technologies and even read books on both. But possible not a single book that covers the in-between areas of both technologies in the same book. That is what this book aims to achieve. Tools/Technologies used throughout this book Windows 10 Internet Information Services (IIS) Web Browser Notepad (for creating text files) Microsoft .Net Framework ASP.NET Microsoft Access Microsoft Access VBA Visual Studio Community (or similar) Who is this book aimed at? This book assumes that the reader is already proficient with Microsoft Access technologies, including the use of VBA coding. In my VBA code examples, I do not spent time describing how the VBA code works. So it will not suit anyone who wants to learn how to develop Microsoft Access applications from scratch. Conversely the book assumes no prior knowledge of web services or Internet Information Services (IIS) which is the server technology used throughout this book. Consequently the early chapters which deal with the set up of an IIS server and creating a simple web service will provide a step by step approach which should appeal to the novice. However I should add that even in these sections, the assumption is that the reader already has Windows experience so for example I might say, use 'Turn Windows features on or off', or 'create a new folder and sub-folder' or 'give yourself Write permissions to the folder' and assume the reader knows how to do those things. It will be difficult to find the right balance between step by step detail and other statements which require action without any further guidance but it will be fun trying. Scope of this book When I first started using IIS, I soon discovered, data could be created and sent through the internet in real-time using a REST based WCF (Windows Communication Foundation) web service, sometimes referred to as a RESTful web service. The benefit of this approach to using a web service is that it allows you to request the service by providing parameters to the individual methods of the web service via the URI address. Rather like calling a function in VBA and passing to it run-time parameters. It also enabled me to use a simple web browser in initial testing of the web service to ensure I had the basics right, simply submitting http requests to the web service and receiving the web service response back in the browser window. This proved to be a great way to test the server-side web service as it allowed me to concentrate on the server-side learning curve, i.e. IIS, WCF web service, .NET and C# and delayed the additional complications of dealing with client-side application development until such time as I needed a more sophisticated client application to consume the web service which I get onto in later chapters. Embedded Code Examples There are numerous software code examples throughout the book, some in C# and some in VBA. All the code has been written by myself, has been fully tested and has no copyright restrictions on it. You are welcome to reuse my code 'as is' or indeed with modifications to suit your own project requirements.
