- We had it all wrong. In the face of overwhelming evidence we were told that everything was fine. The planet was not warming, there would be enough resources for all, our economy was growing, the future never looked brighter and we could trust our leaders to do what was best for us . . . We swallowed the whole thing hook, line and sinker. But, as the planet heated up, it also began to dry and the fresh water that everyone took for granted was suddenly in short supply. You and I didn't really notice. We opened our taps or drove our SUVs to the store to buy it by the bottle. No big deal . . . But to the companies that realized the potential of the situation, it was a very big deal. It was huge. Trillions and trillions of dollars could be made. Everyone had to have water, especially clean water. They started buying it all up. The water rights, the public infrastructure, the bottling companies, the utilities. Let's face it. It's the perfect product. Everyone needs it and it falls out of the sky! And, once they'd polluted most of what was already in the ground, who else could we turn to? The companies devoured each other in a frenzy of take-overs until there was just one that could dictate whatever price it wanted. They even hired private military--mercenaries if you will--to guard reservoirs from anyone who might be desperate enough to try to sneak a sip. There came a day when people began to die because they couldn't afford to buy the clean water anymore, when entire communities were wiped out because their crops were poisoned by the water that was left--water that was frequently contaminated with lead, mercury, sewage . . . On that day the dominoes began to fall, and they propelled our world into chaos and anarchy and civil war.
