- The Codex Mendoza does not have a single, identifiable author. It was created under the direction of Antonio de Mendoza, the first viceroy of New Spain, who commissioned the manuscript in 1542. The codex was produced by indigenous Aztec scribes and artists, likely educated in the traditions of pre-Hispanic pictorial writing, with the accompanying Spanish text added by a Spanish priest or scholar.This collaborative effort between indigenous and Spanish creators reflects the hybrid nature of early colonial-era documents in the Americas. While the identities of the indigenous contributors remain unknown, their artistry and cultural knowledge were vital in preserving the richness of Aztec history and daily life in the Codex Mendoza.
